Talelight writes bedtime stories using AI. It is an app for parents, used with their children. This policy explains what leaves your device when you use it, where it goes, and how long it is kept. Talelight is provided by Anton Mitrafanau, IE (“we”).

In short

  • To write a story, the app sends your child's first name, age, pronouns and a few favourite things you entered, together with the world, friends, adventures and lesson you chose, to our server, which passes them to OpenAI. The story comes back and is kept on your device.
  • Our server does not store the story or your child's details. It keeps a record of each request, never its content, for 90 days, to count free stories and stop abuse.
  • Reading aloud happens on your device. No audio is recorded or sent anywhere.
  • No ads, no tracking, no third-party analytics or advertising code. We do not sell your data.

1Children

Talelight is made for parents and carers to use with children. The app does not ask children for anything, has no accounts, no chat and no way to enter free text other than the fields a parent fills in. The only things about a child that leave the device are what a parent types into the hero's profile: a first name, an age, pronouns for the story, and up to five favourite things. You can use a nickname or a made-up name, and the app works just as well.

We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information directly, write to us and we will delete it.

2What you send, and where it goes

When you ask for a story, the app sends to our server: the hero's profile described above, anyone from real life you added (a name and a relation, such as “Lena, big sister”), the world, friends, adventures and lesson you picked, the length and kind of story, the moment from real life you chose or typed, the language the app is shown in, and, for an adventure with choices, the chapters so far and the choices made. Our server turns this into instructions and passes them to OpenAI, whose model writes the story. OpenAI does not use what it receives from us to train its models, and keeps it for up to 30 days to detect abuse, unless the law requires it to keep it longer.

Our server does not store the story, the profile or the choices. The story is kept only on your device, in the app, and only if you choose to keep it. Deleting a story, or the app, deletes it.

What the app shows you about worlds, friends, adventures, lessons and moments comes from our server too, so we can add to it without an update. That request carries nothing about you.

3Reading aloud

Stories are read aloud by the voices built into iOS, on your device. No audio is recorded, and nothing about the reading leaves your device. The sleep timer and the night sounds work on the device as well.

4An identifier for your device

The app creates a random identifier and keeps it in your device's keychain. It is not your name, your email, your Apple ID or the advertising identifier. On devices that support it, the app also uses Apple's App Attest, which creates a key on your device, to prove that requests come from the genuine app. We use these to count the free stories and to stop abuse.

The identifier stays in the keychain if you delete the app, so that reinstalling does not renew the free stories. Erasing the device removes it.

5Records of each request

For each story our server records the time, your device identifier, whether the request was attested, the language, the kind and length of story, which chapter it was, the model that wrote it, how many tokens it took, whether your subscription was active, and whether it completed. Never your child's name, never the story.

The app also sends our server a few events about how it is used, under the same identifier: that onboarding was seen, that the upgrade screen was shown and from where, that a story was started, finished or kept, that a choice was made, that a voice was changed. Each is a short name and a few words; none carries a name or a story.

We use these records to count free stories, to limit how much one device can use in a day, to find abuse, to keep the cost of the service in check, and to see which parts of the app are used. They are deleted after 90 days.

6Server logs

Our server's logs hold the same details, together with the IP address and the time of each request. They are deleted after 90 days. IP addresses are also held in memory for ten minutes to limit how quickly requests can be made.

7Subscriptions

Payments are handled entirely by Apple; we never see your payment details. The app sends our server the transaction Apple signed, so that the server can check your subscription itself. We check it and do not keep it; the request records only note whether a subscription was active.

8What we don't do

The app shows no advertising, contains no third-party analytics or advertising libraries, does not use the advertising identifier, and does not track you across other companies' apps or websites. We do not sell your data, and do not share it with anyone except as described here. In the words of the California Consumer Privacy Act, we do not sell or share your personal information.

Crash and performance reports that iOS collects stay on your device, unless you choose in iOS Settings to share them with app developers, in which case Apple passes them to us without identifying you.

11Your choices and rights

You choose what goes into a hero's profile, and you can change or remove it in Settings at any time. You can delete any story from the library. To stop sending data, stop using the app and delete it; the records of your requests are deleted within 90 days.

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal data about you, or to object to how it is used. Write to us to exercise any of them. The records hold no name or email, so we may not be able to tell which are yours; they are deleted after 90 days in any case.
